The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was established in the year 1991 and is housed in an independent three storied building in the campus. The department offers 4 years Bachelors degree program [ B. Tech] in Electronics and Communication Engineering, and 2 years Masters degree program [ M. Tech.] in two specializations, affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The first M. Tech programme in Advanced Communication and Information Systems started in the year 2011 and second M. Tech programme in Advanced Electronics and Communication Engineering started in the year 2013.
The students for the B. Tech program are admitted based on the rank list prepared based on two scores, namely the score obtained in the entrance examination conducted by the Government of Kerala and the marks scored in the qualifying board examination. The annual intake is 60 students. An additional 6 students are admitted in the third semester through lateral entry. B. Tech in Electronics and Communication at RIT Kottayam is a sought after branch of study for the top raked students in the State of Kerala. Department of Electronics offers M. Tech in two specialisations and the annual intake is 18 students in both the specializations. Admission to M. Tech program is done through centralized allotment process by the Director of Technical education based on a valid GATE score [www.dtekerala.gov.in].
The students get placement through the Career Guidance and Placement Cell (CGPC) of the College. Most of the alumni of the college are currently working in reputed national and international organizations. Some of them pursued higher studies in IITs, IISc, IIMs, NITs and top ranked foreign Universities. The Faculty of the department is the best of the lot and most of them have obtained higher qualifications from premier institutions in India. Faculty members actively pursue research through students and undertake projects funded through Govt. agencies.
The Department has full- fledged laboratories to train the undergraduate and research students from the very basics to modern trends in the field of Electronics and Communication. Students utilize the modern lab equipments to carry out design and testing of various projects. The department library has reference books and magazines. Online journals and e-books are accessible to the students through intranet. There is a full-fledged computer centre at the department with sufficient computing facility having broad band internet connectivity.
The department periodically organizes seminars and workshops to train faculty and students on emerging research areas and trends in the area of Electronics Engineering. Faculty from premier institutions are invited to the department for lectures under visiting faculty scheme. Various academic activities take place in the department with the funding of TEQIP Phase II. Apart from faculty development programmes, TEQIP supports Equity Assurance Programme (EAP) which includes remedial classes and scholarship for the students. Industry-Institute Interaction Cell (IIIC) of TEQIP scheme regularly conducts talks by Industry experts in the Department. The Electronics Association is very active in organizing and conducting technical festivals and project exhibitions. Students are encouraged to participate in intercollegiate technical/cultural competitions organized by other institutions.
From 2013 onwards, Department follow the practices recommended by outcome based education (OBE) by conducting periodic reviews by class committee, class PTA, and department advisory board. Evaluation of faculty by students are performed twice in a semester. Surveys are conducted among students, parents and alumni to evaluate the outcomes achieved.
Established in the year 1991, the department aims to induce academic knowledge and laboratory exposure to bring about proficient electronic-radio-communication engineers. The students are provided with an extensive knowledge and ideas from well-trained and dedicated faculty most of them being PhD holders from premier institutes in the country. The programs focused on student orientation in both academic as well as non-academic arenas. They are encouraged to participate in technical and non-technical events to develop more confidence and hone their soft and technical skills. Students are motivated to undergo in-plant training and industrial visits (IV) are arranged every year to get industry exposure. Sponsored research projects investigated by the faculty and supported by various government and research organizations have helped the department to take giant leaps in research related activities. The research activities in the department proliferate in various domain in the field of electronics and communication involving students which helps the undergraduates foster desire for lifelonglearning........
